Visions of Germany

Two of Germany’s most scenic and historic regions unfold from a bird’s eye view Experience the fairy tale beauty, natural wonders, and rich history of southern Germany. Shot in high definition from a helicopter-mounted camera, each tour is accompanied by a poetic narrative and evocative soundtrack of regional music, including works by native sons Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner, and Johann Strauss. Visions of Germany: Bavaria—Take a journey filled with royal intrigue, Alpine majesty, and charming villages where the past merges with the present. See the Mediterranean flair of the Bodensee, the “German Riviera”; the old walled city of Rothenburg; King Ludwig’s fanciful castles; snow-covered mountain resort towns; and more. Visions of Germany: Along the Rhine—One of the world’s great rivers, the Rhine provides the perfect route to explore southwestern Germany, from Lake Constance to Cologne, with side trips to the Black Forest of legend and lore, the rich wine region, historic Bonn, the romantic string of castles like beads on a necklace at Koblenz, Heidelberg, and more. Includes bonus footage not seen on public television. Customer Review: Not HD Although the DVD is wonderfully shot, it is NOT in High Definition, and because it is in widescreen, I presumed it was. Moral: never presume.

Sheep Farming in Barnet
Toyah’s First Two Albums, Now Available on One CD. Customer Review: The (Real) Best of Toyah In One Place!!! Before Toyah wrote a bunch of top ten songs for the early 80s U.K. market (It’s a Mystery, Good Morning Universe, I Want to be Free, etc.), she stuck with edgier, harder, warped sci-fi /impending doom / paranoid / fantasy themes. Call it alternative new-wave — and it broke new ground without the total nihilism of punk. The two Toyah albums that most epitomize this trend are Sheep Farming in Barnet and Blue Meaning. I believe the albums represent Toyah at her most introspective, commenting on the failures of England and its social structures to create a bright future for its people. Neon Womb and Victims of the Riddle (on Barnet) sadly reflect on the desanctification of life. Spaced Walking, Ghosts, Mummies (on Blue Meaning) reflect different aspects of detachment. Ieya also calls out to gods/goddesses to save us from, well, most likely ourselves. Insects completes the death cycle, literally recycling us back while we’re in the ground. Good Grief! So, what is the music like? Imagine the Talking Heads meets Trent Reznor of NIN meets Blondie at a Trekkers Con. One could say this is conventional rock with a goth bent — You’ll just have to get some music samples. Just note there’s hardly any top-ten bubblegummy stuff here. This is not light music and bears repeated listenings. Closest matches in style: Nina Hagen, Lene Lovich. If you like this album, please search out my other favourite Toyah “The Changeling” which is brilliant in its own way.

The Secret Garden (1991 Original Broadway Cast)
Inspired by Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel of the same name, The Secret Garden was set apart from the beginning by the composition of its creative team. Not many Broadway shows can boast a female composer (Lucy Simon), director (Susan H. Schulman), librettist/lyricist (Marsha Norman), and producer/set designer (Heidi Landesman)–not to mention an 11-year old (Daisy Eagan) in the lead. This story of a little girl who helps her grieving uncle and sickly cousin regain a taste for life is a delicate, lovely achievement. Steeped in moody Victoriana, it should enchant those who enjoy a more understated style of musical theater. The great cast includes Mandy Patinkin, Rebecca Luker as his dead wife Lily’s ghost, and the perenially underrated Alison Fraser. –Elisabeth Vincentelli Customer Review: THE SECRET GARDEN Is Alive With Genius An Original Cast Recording of any Broadway Musical has many obstacles to overcome from the outset: not only do the music and lyrics have to be enjoyable, and the arrangements must be intriguing, but the recording also must somehow impart the feel of actually BEING in the audience of the Broadway show. Most Cast Recordings fall miserably short of these requirements. Happily, THE SECRET GARDEN, succeeds where most others fail. THE SECRET GARDEN, with music by Lucy Simon and lyrics by Marsha Norman, is a lush, magnificent recording filled with some of the most beautiful and soaring operatic music I have ever heard on or off the Broadway stage. In the classic style of Broadway genius Stephen Sondheim, there are no “puff pieces” on this CD…each song is necessary to advance the story, and once the listener has enjoyed the CD, they will, without doubt, feel they had a front row seat for this lovely bouquet of a show. Since there are 36 different cuts on this CD (after all, most of the dialogue is sung, in true operatta form) it is extremely difficult to choose the musical standouts. The opening of the CD, which sets the tone of this story, is nothing short of brilliant, as it packs a lot of information so effortlessly into song. “Lilly’s Eyes” as sung by Mandy Patinkin, who’s character is lamenting the death of his wife, is chillingly beautiful, as is the haunting duet “Come To My Garden”. The CD’s show stopper is a rousing rendition of an inspirational song called “Hold On”, and is sure to become a Broadway classic. The show’s cast, including Daisy Eagen as the little girl around whom most of the action takes place, Mandy Patinkin as her Uncle, John Babcock, Alison Fraser, and Rebecca Luker have some of the finest operatic voices ever heard on ANY stage. This is a show with a true heart, a brilliant soul, and is, in short a soaring celebration of the Broadway theatre at its finest! Run…don’t walk…to buy this CD. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Secret Garden
Customer Review: Brilliant Adaptation!!!!! I love this movie!Since I was around 5 or 6 years old, this film has been one of my favorites. The original book is a timeless classic for all ages.Out of all the film adaptations, this one is tied with the Hallmark one as my favorite. It perfectly recreates the eerie feel of the manor and the moors it is built upon. The black and white appearance of the film are made for this type of piece. Also, when the film switches to technicolor for the garden scenes, the effect is stunning. It makes for a seamless transition from the somber outside world into the pleasant magic of the garden. In addition to this, the acting is wonderful.Margaret O’Brien is the ideal choice to play Mary Lennox. She manages to make the transition from nasty child to nice child seem real and convincing. She is also very likable in the part even at her bratiest stage.Aside from her,the rest of the cast is also excellent with all of the child actors showing surprisingly strong talent.Indeed,if more child actors in present times had this much talent, more family films would actually be tolerable to watch. As it is,this film is a masterpiece. It is an excellent addition to any one’s movie collection.

The Songmakers Collection
In an office building a few blocks from Times Square, a group of talented teens rewrote the soundtrack to the American experience. The string of chart- topping melodies they penned earned the Brill Building the nickname “The Hit Factory.” Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Bobby Darin are among the legends who passed through its doors. “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling,” “Up on a Roof,” and “Hound Dog” are just a few of the hits that came pouring out. This unprecedented look at “Teen Pan Alley” includes in-depth portraits of some of the biggest names in the business, along with a fascinating, behind-the-scenes look at the heady days when the Brill Building was the center of the pop universe. A treasure trove of unforgettable songs, rare photos and interviews with everyone from Carole King to Phil Ramone makes this the definitive story of a musical revolution. Customer Review: Fabulously entertaining look at the music of the 50’s & 60’s If you’re a fan of 50’s & 60’s music, you must own this DVD! Features segments on songwriters Lieber & Stoller, Carole King & Gerry Goffin, Neil Sedaka, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, Burt Bacharach & Hal David plus Bobby Darin. Also features clips of many artists performing, including Darin, Dionne Warwick, Frank Sinatra, the Coasters et al. Also includes interviews with Shadow Morton, Jerry Wexler, Ahmet Ertegun, Ben E. King, the late Doc Pomus, and Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las, to name just a few. Five hours of a great look back at how the music of the late 50’s and early 60’s was made, this book is a perfect compliment to Ken Emerson’s book “Always Magic In The Air”. Get them both. It’ll be the best $30 (at current prices) you ever spent.

Thirty Years of Farming
Customer Review: best one yet As one of the biggest artists in bluesgrass today, James King comes back with a hit again. The title track, “Thirty years of Farming” happens to be my favorite. This album is his best yet and i hope there is more to follow.
