Customer Review: Great performances, okay movie Sometimes it’s hard to watch a movie that receives large amounts of praise. You always feel like your less-than-enthusiastic view of the film will have people proclaiming that you “didn’t get it and missed the point”. In the case of the Queen, I felt like it centered on an intriguing time, it had excellent performances yet at the same time, I felt it did have some issues that kept bugging me and while I will recommend the film, it just has too many aspects to it that dragged it down. It’s the end of August 1997 and new Prime Minister Tony Blair, a kind of modernizer who wants to change some of Britain’s established rules, is a kind of fish out of water when it comes to etiquette around Queen Elizabeth II. However tragedy strikes when Diana, Princess of Wales, is killed in a car crash in Paris. The country and the world mourns while the Royal Family remains in their palace without so much as public appearances or issuing statements, preferring to keep it a private matter and not sensationalizing it. The British tabloids have other ideas as they deem it insensitive and stoic so Blair tries to convince the Queen to at least do something in the public before they decide the monarchy is unneeded. After watching the Queen, 2 things struck me: 1) the huge scrutiny that happens in the British Press and their brutal stories that make the paper and 2) everyone acted really well but the film just didn’t sit well with me. Helen Mirren is of course fabulous as the Queen and balances that line between going over-the-top primadonna and unemotional mannequin. When she finally breaks down, she’s facing away from the camera as if to say even we aren’t allowed to see even an actress playing the Queen cry on-screen. Another highlight was Michael Sheen, playing Tony Blair, who infuses him with a kind of real-world sensability since he’s obviously clueless about mannerisms around royalty. Of course the big question is did he really want the Queen to look more favorably to the public or use it as a kind of publicity factory. Who knows. The only one I felt didn’t click with me was Prince Charles, Diana’s ex. He almost feels opportunistic, like he tries to make things look better in his favor. Maybe it was just me. The other flaw I felt it had was a sense of a pacing and repetitive tone. Of course it’s a character study but in films, there’s usually things characters do to bide time and make the scenes feel intriguing. Here, characters just…talk, and not the kind of meaningful talk it should’ve had. And after awhile you start to notice characters kind of repeat themselves too much in scenes. The Queen tries her hardest to be sympathetic without giving in to changing values, Blair is concerned at the lack of statements from the monarch while Queen’s husband expresses non-supportive news in regards to Diana, her attention and what the public wants. After awhile it feels what a friend calls egg-like: whether it’s sunny-side up or scrambled or over-easy, it’s still egg in the end. Weird analogy I know. So is it worth a watch? Well many people will enjoy it but for me, I felt it was a well-made but kind of flawed film. Commence “you didn’t get it” remarks.

Customer Review: ‘That Old Weird America’ Slim Cessna plies the oddest brand of C & W I’ve ever heard. Odd even in the sense that he makes Kinky Friedman’s Texas Jewboys sound like graduates of the Tabernacle choir. Slim’s reedy, nasal whine, his hollers, yodels and confessional, lower register banter, sit perfectly within the brilliantly performed, C & W mode. It’s a mode that only takes my interest in special circumstances. The much neglected & under-recorded Paul Siebel springs to mind. And here, it’s the manic humour of Slim’s delivery. Mainstream religious thoughts are rarely evoked in everyday speech, that aside from song, in Australia.(Which makes the sanctimony of G.W Bush’s invoking of the Lord in his addresses to the nation, doubly ridiculous & insincere from this hemisphere). So much of Slim’s ravings assume an intensity, an irreverance & irony that may not be his intention. Witnessing a live show would dispell these issues, but that’s an improbalility for me. It wouldn’t dispell the intoxicating music and the humour. Although an air of country carnival pervades the disc, there’s a superficial resemblance to the, the Verve; possibly a silly point, like saying Willard Grant Conspiracy is like Nic Cave.

After his foray into old school country with 2004’s “Cut ‘N Shoot”, legendary singer/songwriter/guitarist/producer Morlix explores a darker, more rock-oriented vibe with this record. Recorded after a year in which he lost several people close to him, the theme of death and dying surfaces on several tracks. His trademark dark humor, however, tempers the sadness and makes “Diamonds And Dust” a unique listening experience. In addition to his originals, Morlix includes a cover of Dylan’s “With God On Our Side”, a song as timely today as it was when it was written 44 years ago. This is another unique and brilliant chapter in Morlix’s uniquely brilliant career.

Radiohead’s third album got compared to Pink Floyd a lot when it came out, and its slow drama and conceptual sweep certainly put it in that category. OK Computer, though, is a complicated and difficult record: an album about the way machines dehumanize people that’s almost entirely un-electronic; an album by a British “new wave of new wave” band that rejects speed and hooks in favor of languorous texture and morose details; a sad and humanist record whose central moment is Thom Yorke crooning “We hope that you choke.” Sluggish, understated, and hard to get a grip on, OK Computer takes a few listens to appreciate, but its entirety means more than any one song. –Douglas Wolk Customer Review: Perfection on a disc After a decade upon its essential release, “OK Computer” still sounds like it could have been recorded today (or more onto the future). Why? Because the album was truly ahead of its time. The monumental, cohesive tracks may be related in concept though all stand out in the tangled weaves made by polarizing technology and its impact on our everyday lives. “Airbag”, the first track, is a dizzy swirl of guitar and strong bassline. “In the next World War, I’m back to save the universsssssssse.” The line sends chills down my spine like every song after it. “Paranoid Android” is a brilliant multilayered track with an equally bizarre music video. “Gucci little piggies” has become my new catchphrase. The rest of the songs are perfection, with the exception of “Fitter Happier” - not really a song but an interlude conveying what humans should do and how to achieve to live a happy, production lifestyle. Do we really need computers telling us what to do?

Wendy Carlos’s Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach’s keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach’s inventive music doesn’t lose any of it’s contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach’s “Two-Part Inventions,” “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” or “Wachet Auf,” Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone–classical scholar or pop enthusiast–can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos’s baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. –Jason Verlinde Customer Review: VERY switched on and total joy! I was thrilled to see how many people like myself love this album & were introduced to it at an early age like I was. I believe the original release was in 1963 (?) and I remember as a kid I thought Walter Carlos was the guy on the cover of the album… so imagine my surprise when years later I see the same album cover with the performer listed as Wendy Carlos. Could it be the same album? Was I about to get really happy? YOU BET! I was so delighted to see this released on CD I can’t even tell you. I loved this album and listened to it repeatedly as a kid. I especially love the pure, triumphant, unadulterated and unapologetic JOY of the first track, the Cantata… wow, turn THAT up in your car and just feel the tears of joy flood your eyes… well, maybe pull over if you are like me and can’t see for that very same reason! Bach is so very well suited to this medium- to hear each line like this and really have so much great color and definition– I think Bach himself would be so very proud of Wendy’s achievement. This album was such a landmark- I also was fascinated by the Tomita Planets (a synthesized version of the same composition by Gustav Holst) when I was younger- but this album will always have a special place in my heart. If you get it for only the very first track, it will be money well spent. Having said that, the whole album is just amazing- the Air on a G string is so reverent and peaceful. The inventions are all a trip! The one in F always cracks me up because that was one of the 1st pieces of his I tried to play… very tough because the hands do exactly the same thing- but 1 measure apart. Wendy’s tempos are cookin’ too, such virtuosity! But the love is there too on the slower movements where the time and care with the dynamics is so evident. GREAT ALBUM, be glad it’s on CD and get it! You won’t regret it.

Customer Review: Cult movies are not always great Since its release in 1999, Mike Judge’s dedication to all slaves of their cubicles has become a cult movie with many devoted admirers. I believe the reason being - majority of us have to work and many are not very happy with their jobs or job environment. If asked, everyone may recall to having a boss from hell, to be annoyed by changing every week TES (Time Entering System), by the printer or copy machine that seem to hate you and break on you every time you need to print or copy something. Well, with all recognizable funny and sad details of the modern office environment that show Judge’s observant eye and wicked sense of humor, the movie is not a great one and not always a good one. It is an average comedy that had interesting potentials but is too long for its length and loses its steam somewhere after first thirty minutes. It’s got too many subplots and supporting characters that were neither interesting, nor necessary, for example, the romance between Peter and a local waitress (Jennifer Aniston). A moneymaking scheme that Peter and his friends devise belongs to the different movie and Peter’s transformation in the end does not seem to be plausible. I was happy for Milton though. 6.5/10

Sydney Pollack’s 1985 multiple-Oscar winner is a sumptuous and emotionally satisfying film about the life of Danish writer Karen Blixen (Meryl Streep), better known as Isak Dinesen, who travels to Kenya to be with her German husband (Klaus Maria Brandauer) but falls for an English adventurer (Robert Redford). The film is slow in developing the relationship, but it is rich in beautiful images of Africa and in the romantic tone surrounding Blixen’s gradual discovery of her life and voice. One downside: while we may all love Redford, he is as convincingly British as Kevin Costner is in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. –Tom Keogh Customer Review: Very good cinematic experience Enjoyed the storyline and it had a strong cast; just not as enticing as other movies of the same genre that I have scene. Still recommend viewing it as 3 and above are “worth seeing” from my perspective. Very good use of 1.5 - 2 hours.

Often taken to task for the maudlin mellowness of his back catalog, Don Henley’s viewpoint on Inside job is frequently as astringent as any of the best of his solo work, if refreshingly more stylistically diverse. Whether skewering the self-absorbed target of “Nobody Else in the World but You” with some welcome funk or lambasting the corporate co-opting of Mother Nature in “Goodbye to a River,” Henley still wears his heart proudly on his sleeve. But the changes in his life have also blunted a previous propensity for self-righteousness into something more akin to subtle, resigned irony, and this album wears it well, especially on strangely downbeat “celebrations” like “For My Wedding.” Featuring a typically all-star cast of guest musician pals (including Stevie Wonder, Randy Newman, Glenn Frey, and Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench), coproducer Stan Lynch (formerly of Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers) has helped Henley fashion a more timeless, deftly shaded production envelope that should age better than most. Though he still can’t help lament his world’s hardening and loss of innocence (to the point of “They’re Not Here, They’re Not Coming,” echoing Randy Newman’s “Trouble in Paradise” nostalgic plea to “bring back the Duke of Earl”), Henley does it here with a subtle grace that may just win him a few new, late-blooming fans. It’s an album that underscores how quickly life’s fine wine can unexpectedly turn to vinegar. –Jerry McCulley Customer Review: Yuck Now I know why I never picked this up when it first came out…ah, the pitfalls of a completist.
